WinEx DE is very easy to learn and use:  you simply use the digitizer pen to trace in the existing and finished grade elevations for contours / topos and spot elevations.  WinEx DE has powerful "Work Region" features which allow you to calculate volumes and material quantities for parking lots and building pads, along with topsoil stripping and site soil shrink / swell percentages.  WinEx DE also lets you automatically "balance" the site.

WinEx DE generates color coded cut & fill maps that show you where the deep areas of cuts & fills occur, cross-sections between any two points on the site, and detailed 3-dimensional displays of any surface (and also a cut/fill display in 3-D). WinEx DE features a slick site balancing routine that lets you quickly adjust either the entire site or any portion of the site to minimize import/export.  WinEx DE runs on most digitizers and can directly paste answers into any Windows estimating program or spreadsheet, such as Excel.
