Digitizer Pictorial: Earthwork "Cut & Fill" Take-off
Sitework Take-off with a Computer: How It's Done
Roll the grading plan out flat on the digitizer surface. The digitizer will measure through about 50 sheets of drawings. Make sure the drawing stays flat and stationary. Next, enter the engineer's scale of the drawing. Then you use the digitizer "Pen" to define the work area, so-called "Limit of Disturbance" (L.O.D.), encircling the perimeter of the job.
Then you use the digitizer pen to trace in each existing topographic line ("topo line"), inputting the elevation for each existing grade line. The lines display up on your computer screen as you trace them. (See red lines below). After inputting all the existing grade, you next trace in the elevations for each finished grade line (See blue lines below). For straight topo lines, simply touch the pen down on the drawing from point to point along the line. For curving grades, trace along the topo line with the digitizer pen.
After tracing all the existing and finish grade lines, you simply "hit the button" and calculate cut & fill quantities within seconds! The computer will figure out the total cubic yardage of "Fill" and "Cut" quantities, and tell you whether you'll need to export ("haul off") dirt, or import ("borrow") dirt to be brought on-site. You can also run a "Site Balance" for the job, to potentially cut costs by either raising or lowering the whole site -- or defined areas within the site -- from grade elevations on the original site plan. You can also define separate work areas within the site for "over-excavation", such as building pads, parking lots and roadways, and calculate totals for each area. See WinEx "Sample Screen Shots" page). You can also take-off curbing, concrete, paving, and structural work.
Sample grading plan, with existing (red) topo lines, and final (blue) grade lines:
Simply trace in all existing grade topos (Red), and all finished grade lines (Blue). The computer will then calculate cut & fill quantities within seconds.
Please note: You can transfer take-off quantities directly into your Excel spreadsheets or any other Windows program..

Structural and Architectural Take-offs:
Measuring the square footage of concrete slab: Simply touch the Pen on each corner of the slab, encircling the perimeter. (Points 1 - 10) and return to where you started. No matter what the shape of the slab, the square footage and perimeter are measured instantly! Measurements and take-off quantities are displayed on your PC monitor. (see WinEx "Sample Screen Shots" page).
Please note: Red and blue lines as shown simulate PC screen display. Measurements display on the PC screen as you take-off each item off. The digitizer does not leave any markings on the drawings.
Please note: You can transfer take-off quantities directly into your Excel spreadsheets any other Windows program..
